What Atlassian bought, and what its free plan costs you now#
Loom is an async video-messaging tool. That is Atlassian's own framing from the day it bought the company: Loom is "an asynchronous (async) video messaging tool that helps users communicate through instantly shareable videos"1. Loom's homepage says the same thing in its own voice — "record and share AI-powered video messages," "the easiest screen recorder you'll ever use," record in a few clicks and share anywhere4. The whole product is designed around one loop: point a camera at your face, capture your screen in one take, get a link, drop it in Slack.
Atlassian paid $975 million for that loop in October 2023, a real markdown from the $1.53 billion valuation Loom carried at its 2021 Series C2. The reason "Loom alternatives" is still a live query two years on is where the free tier lands. The plan most people actually meet Loom on caps at 25 videos in your library and 5 minutes per recording3. Hit either wall and you delete old clips to make room, or you move to Business at $18 per user per month, or to Business + AI at $24 for the auto-editing and transcription3.
Read those caps as what they are: a messaging trial. Twenty-five short clips is a healthy run of "here's how I'd fix this bug" notes to a teammate and nowhere near a library of maintained product demos. The five-minute ceiling is roomy for a quick reply and a hard wall for a training series. If you came to Loom to make a produced demo for your website, you are not being overcharged so much as sold the wrong tool and then billed for it.
Loom's defaults are messaging defaults#

None of this is a knock on Loom. It is a description of a tool that optimized hard for a single job. The mistake is grabbing it for a different job and then blaming yourself when the result feels raw. The craft of a real demo video — a written script, the dead time trimmed, a single task carried start to finish — is a different build from firing off a talking-head note, and Loom's ergonomics are tuned for the note.
Four jobs hiding under one search#
"Loom alternative" is four searches wearing one query. Before you compare a single tool, name which of these you are actually doing, because the honest replacement differs for each, and three of the four are not "another Loom" at all.

For the async-recorder bucket, the honest news is that the caps you left Loom over are the category norm.
